As part of the refurbishment of The Headland Cornwall’s iconic former ballroom, now reimagined as a light-filled lounge, Axminster Carpets was commissioned to supply a carpet befitting one of Cornwall’s most celebrated hotels. Overlooking dramatic coastal scenery, the space required a design that would enhance its sense of occasion while remaining welcoming for daytime dining.

Working closely with DO Design Studios, Axminster Carpets delivered a bespoke design that reflects the hotel’s heritage and elegant proportions. Intricate decorative motifs — including details inspired by the Cornish Sea Campion, a native coastal flower — and a structured border create a sense of refinement and order, while a warm palette of golds and soft neutrals complements the room’s architecture and maximises natural light.
The carpet plays a central role in defining the character of the lounge, subtly anchoring furniture layouts and guiding movement through the space. Its classic detailing provides a visual connection to the building’s history, while its construction ensures the durability required for a busy hospitality environment.
A large central area preserves the original ballroom’s timber dance floor, with the surrounding carpet designed as three precisely pattern-matched rugs. These loose-laid sections can be rolled up and removed when required, allowing the space to transition seamlessly for events while maintaining a cohesive visual scheme when in place.
Today, the transformed room offers guests an inviting setting to enjoy tea, cakes, and uninterrupted coastal views. Axminster Carpets’ contribution helps ensure the space feels both timeless and contemporary, a fitting backdrop for relaxed luxury at The Headland Cornwall.
