“Having seen the whole process from start to finish and met your incredibly skilled team, I now know what it takes to produce this wonderful British work of art.”

The recent restoration of the 18th-century Hogarth murals at St Bartholomew’s Hospital has brought new life to one of London’s most remarkable historic interiors. As part of the multi-million-pound conservation project, the Great Hall and Hogarth Staircase were meticulously returned to their former splendour, with specialists revitalising everything from gilded ceilings and carved plasterwork to the monumental paintings themselves. Central to the refurbishment was the careful selection of furnishings that could honour the building’s heritage while supporting its renewed role as a public cultural space.
Among those trusted to contribute to this landmark restoration were Axminster Carpets. Our traditionally crafted, British-made carpets were chosen to sit alongside Hogarth’s world-famous artworks — a testament to the quality, integrity and longevity for which Axminster has been known for generations. By providing a floor covering that complements both the historic architecture and the revived grandeur of the interiors, we are proud to play a role in ensuring this nationally significant space can continue to be enjoyed, preserved and used for centuries to come.
Historic Interior Designer Woody Clark had this to say about working with Axminster Carpets:
“Having seen the whole process from start to finish and met your incredibly skilled team, I now know what it takes to produce this wonderful British work of art.”
Special thanks to Woody Clark, Barts Heritage, and photographer Matthew Andrews.
